Tina Turner’s ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It’ Re-Released

Three decades ago, Tina Turner reclaimed her history with the soundtrack album for the movie What’s Love Got to Do With It. She re-recorded hits she’d originally cut with her abusive ex-husband, Ike Turner so that they could stand on their own as testaments to her survival. These included “Nutbush City Limits,” “Proud Mary,” and “A Fool in Love.” She was in her early 50s, her voice still sounded great, and the album became a hit. Now, the record will be even bigger when it’s reissued on April 26 as an expanded box set.

In addition to the original album, which also contained solo hits like “I Don’t Wanna Fight” (which premiered on the soundtrack) and the title track, the four-disc, one-DVD collection will feature a volume of single edits, remixes, and instrumentals, and two volumes with a full concert. The concert took place at San Bernardino, California’s Blockbuster Pavilion, on Sept. 15, 1993, and the box set includes the gig both as audio and on the DVD.

The reissue will also be available as a two-disc edition without the concert and as a standalone vinyl LP, featuring the remastered edition of the original album made last year.

Turner continued singing her hits and celebrating her freedom from Ike through her final tour in 2009. She’d written about all she endured in her 1986 memoir, I, Tina, which served as the basis for the movie What’s Love Got to Do With It, which starred Angela Bassett as the singer. The actress gave Turner’s induction speech into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021. “When I played Tina in What’s Love Got to Do With It, I had the terrifying opportunity of trying to figure out how she became the extraordinary woman that we’ve come to know,” she said in her speech. “Fortunately, I had the generous guidance of Tina herself to help me. It was one of the most demanding roles I’ve ever played. But it was also one of the most fulfilling. Because just like Tina, I too was a little Black girl, who had dreams far beyond what the world expected of me.”
