Get to Know Skaiwater, the Rapper and Producer Who Caught the Eye of Lil Nas X

Last week, Skaiwater released the single and music video for “light!,” featuring Lil Nas X. The 23-year-old rapper-producer described securing a feature with one of the biggest artists in the world as a “surreal moment.” The collaboration came about through online interactions, with Skaiwater explaining, “I was in a lot of music communities, so you cross paths with a lot of people, but I think we just connected and stayed in tune. We have a similar understanding of things and think in similar ways.”

“light!” is a self-love anthem, with Skaiwater crooning on the chorus, “I just had a lightbulb/I’m tryna break the cycle/Yeah, go ahead with that groupie shit/Yeah, I’m sure that bitch a nice dude.” Produced by 9lives, the track deviates from Skaiwater’s usual self-production, drawing inspiration from artists like Nicki Minaj and Kid Ink. The track gained traction on TikTok prior to Lil Nas X’s feature and is expected to reach a wider audience with his inclusion.

Originating from Nottingham, Skaiwater began their music career by creating songs in their bedroom and sharing them on SoundCloud. The move to Los Angeles was motivated by both practical and personal reasons, with Skaiwater noting the importance of connecting with their audience in the States and finding a sense of identity in a more diverse environment.

Skaiwater, who identifies as nonbinary, drew inspiration for “light!” from tough realizations about the music industry. They emphasized the importance of taking control of their own message and expression, especially as an openly nonbinary artist in the rap genre. Moving forward, Skaiwater aims to be intentional with their music and self-expression, emphasizing the need to keep creating despite others’ opinions.

As Skaiwater continues their journey as an artist, they prioritize self-expression and authenticity, with plans to release more music and stay true to their unique identity.
